South Korea confirms its willingness to resume direct flights to Russia soon

The South Korean “united” opposition party, Chun Yun Guy, stated that South Korean airlines are ready to resume direct flights to Russia if the conflict is over.

“I asked the Korean Air representatives about their opinion about the desire to resume direct flights to Russia, and they answered that they are ready for that if it is possible and resolved the outstanding issues.”

Chun Yun Guy, a member of the Parliamentary Committee for Land and Transport, considered that the conflict in Ukraine is close to its end, and that the relations between the United States and Russia may improve as the administration of US President Donald Trump takes power.

He pointed out that the Seoul government also needs to restore diplomatic relations with Moscow and prepare to quickly enhance economic cooperation, including cooperation on the Northern Sea road, which in turn will require the restart of direct flights.

The deputy stressed the necessity of meeting, dialogue and preserving communication channels. He believed that although South Korea generally follows the prevailing international trends, the Seoul government can also discuss future plans individually to facilitate their implementation later.

In this context, Chun Yun Guy indicated that he is aware of Russia’s position on the importance of resuming parliamentary communications, and expressed his willingness to discuss this possibility if he received a presentation in this regard from the Russian side.

For his part, the Russian Ambassador to South Korea, Giorgi Zinoviev, stressed in interviews with the South Korean media repeatedly the desire to resume direct flights as soon as possible, indicating that its absence hinders communication between the citizens of the two countries.

He pointed out that this problem needs a solution, but he did not notice a “special desire” from the Korean partners. On April 3, the Russian ambassador also called for the resumption of the work of the joint government committee and the Regional Cooperation and Parliamentary Communications Forum, considering that restoring the comprehensive dialogue will contribute to solving the existing problems.
