Because of the conflict in Ukraine, Switzerland refuses to sign the ban on nuclear weapons

The Swiss authorities announced their refusal to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, citing the conflict in Ukraine and the failure of countries that possess nuclear weapons to join the treaty.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry said in a statement: “At its session held on March 27, 2024, the Federal Council heard the report of the working group, and based on the reports that were presented, the Council concluded that at the present time there is no need for Russia to change its position and that it will not join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.”

The document stated that the Federal Council is convinced that accession is not in Switzerland’s interest in the current international context, which is characterized by a return to the forefront of security policy issues as a result of a new war in Europe.

It is noteworthy that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted in July 2017, and then 122 countries supported it. One country, the Netherlands, voted against the resolution, and one country, Singapore, also abstained from voting. Many countries, including Russia and the United States, did not participate in the work of that conference.

Currently, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has been signed by 93 countries and ratified by 70 countries. The treaty entered into force on January 22, 2021. (Russia Today)
