After its cancellation, a pro-Kurdish candidate wins Türkiye’s local elections

The Supreme Electoral Council approved the victory of the candidate of the Equality and Peoples’ Democracy Party, the largest pro-Kurdish party in Turkey, for the presidency of the municipality in the city of Van (east), after his election was annulled in favor of a candidate for the ruling party, his party reported on Wednesday.

The party filed an appeal on Wednesday before the Supreme Electoral Council to protest the invalidation of its candidate’s victory in Van, the major city with a Kurdish majority located near the border with Iran.

The joint mayoral candidates from the Equality and Peoples’ Democracy Party received 55.48 percent of the votes. While the Justice and Development Party candidate received 27.15 percent of the votes. (Sky News)
