The Central Bank of Yemen gives banks 60 days to move their centers from Sanaa to Aden

Today, the internationally recognized Yemeni government ordered commercial banks to move their headquarters from the capital, Sanaa, which is under the control of the Houthis, to the city of Aden, in the south of the country, within 60 days.

According to a document issued by the Central Bank of Yemen: “The governor of the internationally recognized Central Bank, Ahmed Ghalib, issued today, Tuesday, Resolution No. (17) of 2024 regarding the transfer of the main centers of commercial banks, Islamic banks, and microfinance banks from the city of Sanaa to the temporary capital, Aden.”“.

The decision gave the banks 60 days to implement, warning those who failed to do so that legal measures would be taken against them in accordance with the provisions of the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Law in force and its executive regulations..

According to the document, the decision came “in view of the illegal measures to which banks and operating banks are exposed to by a group classified as a terrorist group (the Houthi group), which would expose banks and operating banks to the risk of freezing their accounts and stopping dealing with them externally.”“.

The Governor of the Central Bank stressed that “this decision will enable the Central Bank to perform its supervisory duties and exercise them in accordance with the law.” “.

The decision comes days after the Houthi group issued a 100-riyal coin to replace the damaged one, in a move that was rejected by the Yemeni government..
