Weapons purchases in the world…a surprise about the Arab world

Arab countries accounted for a quarter of the world’s arms imports in 2023, according to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

According to the institute’s data, Qatar topped the Arab countries with arms imports amounting to 6.2% of the world’s imports, followed by Saudi Arabia with 4.5%, then Egypt, which imported weapons amounting to 3.9% of the world’s total imports during the past year.

In the following list, we review the extent of Arab countries’ acquisition of global weapons:

1- Qatar: accounts for 6.2% of total global imports

2- Saudi Arabia: accounts for 4.5% of total global imports

3- Egypt: accounts for 3.9% of total global imports

4- UAE: accounts for 3.1% of total global imports

5- Morocco: accounts for 1.6% of total global imports

6- Kuwait: accounts for 1.5% of total global imports

7- Algeria: accounts for 1.2% of total global imports

8- Bahrain: accounts for 1.1% of total global imports

9- Tunisia: accounts for 0.1% of total global imports
